The Panic Button is launching Q1 2027. This article describes how it will work based on our current design.

When a vendor cancels same-day, you need a replacement fast. The Panic Button surfaces backup options in real time — ranked by likelihood of success, not just alphabetical order.

Where backup suggestions come from

Your own network, first. If you've used The Middleman to work with vendors before, the platform knows who you've worked with, in what context, and at what quality. Your established relationships are always surfaced first.

The Bridge — second. If your own network can't fill the gap, The Bridge (our AI vendor matching network) surfaces vendors who:

• Match your event's style and scale
• Are geographically close to your venue
• Are available (or potentially available — the AI will flag when it can't confirm availability)
• Have verified working relationships with other vendors at your event

Ranked by success likelihood. The AI ranks backup options by: your prior relationship (highest weight), style match, capacity match, and geographic proximity. Not just "here's a list of bartenders in San Francisco" — "here are the 3 bartenders most likely to say yes, show up, and do a good job at your specific event."

The availability problem

We can't guarantee that a vendor surfaced by The Panic Button is available. What we can tell you is their likelihood of availability based on their booking patterns.

Vendors with The Middleman profiles who have enabled availability notifications will receive an automated request from the platform when The Panic Button surfaces them as a backup. You'll see in real time whether they've accepted, declined, or haven't responded.

When The Bridge can't help

The Bridge backup network is only as strong as the vendor network in your area. In major metropolitan areas (San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Nashville, Austin, Miami), The Bridge will typically surface 3-8 credible backup options within 5 minutes.

In smaller markets, the bench may be shorter. We're building the network actively — every vendor who joins The Middleman makes The Bridge stronger for everyone in their region.

Expanding your backup bench

The best time to build your backup vendor network is before you need it. Here's how:

1. Add vendors you trust to your profile. Any vendor you've worked with can be connected to your account. This makes them primary candidates for Panic Button backups.

2. Encourage your vendors to join The Middleman. Every vendor in your network who creates a profile becomes a stronger backup candidate — the platform knows their style, capacity, and working relationships.

3. Diversify your working relationships. The AI gets smarter the more varied your vendor network is. If you only ever use one rental company, you have no backup data. If you've worked with three, the AI can rank them accurately.
